If that sounds familiar, you might have eldest daughter syndrome. Eldest daughter syndrome isn't a diagnosable condition, but rather the behaviors, thought patterns, and priorities that can arise from being what's known as "parentified" as a child. People experiencing eldest daughter syndrome disproportionately tend to be women from low-income families and families from the global majority who might have more culturally-imposed expectations of daughters, she said. Capleton shared the signs you could be experiencing eldest daughter syndrome, whether you're the firstborn daughter or not. Feeling the need to take responsibility for everyone elseOne of the biggest signs of eldest daughter syndrome is taking on a lot of responsibility from a young age.

Port-au-Prince CNN —They have the calm of people who have lived through terrible things. As gangs rampage in Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince, several children and teenagers tell CNN they have been orphaned, wounded, raped and even recruited by members of these armed groups. Some are navigating life in neighborhoods ruled by gangs, doing their best to stay out of danger. Others work for the gangs, tasked with dangerous jobs such as spying on rival groups or the gory work of disposing of bodies. Meanwhile, across the country, many more children are going hungry, according to UNICEF, as food prices spike amid the insecurity.

The study, from academics at three elite universities, looked at the impacts of fake positive reactions to jokes by employees. It found that bosses who make too many jokes actually increase the amount of surface acting employees do, which can then lead to emotional exhaustion or burnout, and lower levels of job satisfaction. AdvertisementThe study found that the leaders who frequently made jokes increased surface acting in followers, which subsequently resulted in poor well-being outcomes, including emotional exhaustion. AdvertisementThe surface acting can trigger a cycle of negative well-being outcomes for employees, per the study. When leaders are more thoughtful about their humor, it actually alleviates the pressure of surface acting.

When busloads of migrants from Venezuela and Latin America started turning up on New York City streets in 2022, it spurred a crisis that has overwhelmed city shelters and incited protests over immigration policies. Thousands of Chinese migrants have also made their way to New York, with many following on the heels of migrants from Central and South America and crossing at the United States-Mexico border. Once they reach the city, however, many are tapping into long-established family and social networks in Chinese enclaves to get on their feet quickly and, for the most part, on their own. It is not known exactly how many Chinese migrants have landed in New York. But immigration court filings since October 2022 show that New York State was their top destination — with more than 21,000 filings for Chinese migrants — followed by California, according to an analysis by Julia Gelatt, an associate director at the Migration Policy Institute.

Does Eating Yogurt Reduce Your Diabetes Risk?

Nonfat or full-fat, flavored or plain, probiotic or natural — yogurt is already peppered with labels. But you may soon see a new claim on your container: This month, the Food and Drug Administration announced it will allow yogurt makers to say their products may prevent Type 2 diabetes. said it has found “limited scientific evidence” that consuming yogurt may reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. The agency’s decision came in response to a petition submitted on behalf of Danone North America, which makes yogurts sold under brands including Activia, Dannon and Oikos. Yogurt can be a nutrient-rich food and part of a healthy diet, and there is some evidence to suggest that people who eat it regularly have a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, said Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard T.H.

Orban has long posed as a globetrotting defender of Christian values and an enemy of liberalism. Novak, a close ally of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban, resigned a week after her presidential pardon was first reported by local news site 444.hu. The revelation caused a public uproar and demands from the opposition for her and former Justice Minister Judit Varga to quit. Varga, who has been a rising star in Orban's ruling Fidesz party, resigned as a lawmaker on Saturday. This has been one of several issues over which Orban has clashed with the European Commission.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian opposition parties have demanded the resignation of the president over her decision to pardon a man convicted as an accomplice in helping cover up a case in a children's home whose director sexually abused children. She added that the reasoning behind her decision was not public and all pardons were divisive by their nature. The former director was sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually abusing several under-age boys in 2004-2016. "I am baffled by Katalin Novak's decision as a human being and as a mother," Momentum chair Anna Donath said in a statement on Wednesday, adding she believed the decision was "morally incomprehensible". Hong Kong CNN —Chinese shares haven’t just had a bad start to 2024. The astonishing losses, reminiscent of the last Chinese stock market crash of 2015-2016, highlight a crisis of confidence among investors concerned about the country’s future. But on the same day, major state-owned banks moved to support the Chinese yuan, in order to prevent the currency from falling too fast as Chinese shares plunged, according to a Reuters report, citing unnamed sources. Topics related to the “market plunge” and “China’s stock market rescue” were trending on Weibo on Tuesday. “I’m sad about today’s stock market performance,” Hu Xijin, former editor-in-chief for state newspaper Global Times, posted on Weibo on Monday.

It has been called the world’s largest armory — a palatial fortress in the middle of the northwest Bronx, with turrets overlooking the subway station. But for nearly 30 years, the Kingsbridge Armory has languished despite grand plans by mega-developers, billionaire investors and celebrities to repurpose the 570,000-square-foot landmark. It hopes to bring high-tech manufacturing jobs, a live performance space, new businesses and affordable housing to the city-owned site. The proposed development, if selected by city officials, would be led by the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, an influential nonprofit group that has fought for racial justice, affordable housing and economic development in the city’s poorest borough since 1974. The plan grew out of years of frustration among community leaders and residents who were tired of being sidelined in previous plans for the armory.

New York City saw its biggest single-day snowfall in nearly two years on Tuesday, breaking its longest streak on record without significant accumulation, the National Weather Service said. As of 7 a.m., 1.4 inches of snow had fallen in Central Park, according to the weather service — with 0.4 inches falling Monday evening, before midnight, and one inch after. That broke a streak of 701 days without meaningful snowfall, which in New York City is measured by at least one inch falling in Central Park on a given day. The last time there was significant snow in the park was Feb. 13, 2022, when 1.6 inches fell. At least another inch of snow was expected by the end of Tuesday, with some neighborhoods expected to see up to three inches, according to the weather service.

Some are still chasing the American dream long after their prime working years. CNN —The border between Egypt and Gaza “must” be closed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday – a move that would give Israel complete control over the Palestinian enclave’s access to the world. Egypt has previously warned Israel against military operations in the corridor, according to Egypt’s Ahram Online. Gaza borders Israel on two sides, and its Mediterranean coast and airspace are also under tight Israeli blockades. But aid groups say it is still far from enough and warn of a growing risk of famine for Gaza’s isolated population if Israeli restrictions on imports persist. In three months of siege, more than 23,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to health authorities in the Hamas-controlled enclave.
